The following information was compiled by America's Second Harvest.

The number of americans living in poverty:

  • In 2006, nearly 37 million people (12.3%) were living in poverty.1
  • In 2006, 7.6 (9.8%) million families were living in poverty.1
  • In 2006, 12.8 million (17.4%) children under the age of 18 were living in poverty.1
  • In 2005, the median household income in the US was $46, 300.2
The number of unemployed Americans:
  • Average unemployment rate in 2006 was 4.6%.3
The number of Americans food insecure and hungry:
  • In 2006, the number of Americans who were food insecure, or hungry or at risk of hunger, was 35.5 million (10.9%).4
  • In 2006, households with children reported food insecurity at almost double the rate for those without children, 15.6% compared to 8.5%.4
